Clinical Overview

Acetylcysteine Tablets / Effervescent Tablets (600mg) is an oral mucolytic and intracellular antioxidant precursor on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. Its free sulfhydryl (-SH) group chemically splits disulfide bonds in mucoprotein complexes, breaking cross-linked polymers and dramatically reducing the viscosity of purulent, thick bronchial mucus to facilitate expectoration. It also replenishes intracellular cysteine pools for glutathione synthesis, protecting lung tissues against oxidative stress. Indicated for acute and chronic bronchopulmonary disorders with excessive, viscous mucus (COPD, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, cystic fibrosis) and contrast-induced nephropathy prevention.

Usage Guidelines

Effervescent tablets: Dissolve 1 tablet (600 mg) completely in half a glass of drinking water and consume immediately once daily (or 600 mg twice daily in severe COPD). Standard tablets: Swallow whole with a full glass of water. Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.

General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.

Possible Side Effects

Common: Mild nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, diarrhea, pyrosis (heartburn), unpleasant sulfur odor/taste. Extremely safe with negligible systemic adverse effects.

*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.

Precautions & Warnings

Over-The-Counter mucolytic effervescent tablet. Must be dissolved in water before drinking. Caution in patients with active peptic ulcer disease (may disrupt gastric mucosal barrier). Space oral antibiotics by at least 2 hours.
