Clinical Overview
N-Acetylcysteine (150mg) and Taurine (500mg) Tablets is a fixed-dose nephroprotective and antioxidant combination on the PMBI formulary. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) is a glutathione precursor that replenishes intracellular cysteine pools, scavenges reactive oxygen species (ROS), improves renal hemodynamics, and downregulates pro-fibrotic TGF-beta signaling. Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is an abundant intracellular sulfur amino acid that modulates osmoregulation, maintains mitochondrial electron transport, inhibits renal tubular cell apoptosis, and prevents advanced glycation end-product (AGE) accumulation. Indicated for adjunctive renal protection in diabetic nephropathy, early-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD), and prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy.
