Clinical Overview

Bisacodyl Suppositories (5mg, 10mg) is a rectal stimulant diphenylmethane laxative on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. Following rectal insertion, bisacodyl is hydrolyzed by endogenous esterases to active bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane (BHPM), directly stimulating sensory nerve endings in the colonic and rectal mucosa to initiate vigorous propulsive peristalsis within 15 to 60 minutes. Indicated for acute constipation, evacuation of the colon prior to surgical or radiological procedures, and bowel retraining in neurogenic bowel.

Usage Guidelines

Administer rectally: Adults: 10 mg suppository; Children: 5 mg suppository. Remove the protective wrapper, moisten the tip with water or lubricant, and insert pointed end first into the rectum while lying on the side with knees bent. Retain for 15 to 30 minutes until the urge to defecate occurs.

General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.

Possible Side Effects

Common: Rectal burning, tenesmus, mild abdominal cramps. Rare/Severe: Proctitis, sloughing of rectal mucosa with chronic use, and electrolyte disturbances.

*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.

Precautions & Warnings

For rectal use only. Not for continuous long-term daily use (can cause laxative dependence). Contraindicated in acute surgical abdomen, acute appendicitis, rectal bleeding, and anal fissures.
