Clinical Overview
Dutasteride Capsules (0.5mg) is a synthetic 4-aza-steroid dual inhibitor of both type 1 and type 2 5-alpha-reductase isoenzymes on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It blocks the enzymatic intracellular conversion of testosterone to 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the prostate, skin, and liver, suppressing circulating DHT levels by >90% and intraprostatic DHT by >94%. This induces apoptotic involution of prostatic epithelial cells, progressively reducing total prostate volume by ~25% and reducing risk of urinary retention and TURP surgery. Indicated for treatment of symptomatic BPH in men with enlarged prostate.

Usage Guidelines
Take orally 0.5 mg once daily with or without food with a full glass of water. Swallow whole; do NOT chew or open capsules as content irritates oropharyngeal mucosa. Minimum 6 months of continuous therapy is needed to evaluate clinical response.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculation disorders, gynecomastia (breast enlargement and tenderness). Rare/Severe: Depressive symptoms, testicular pain, and localized angioedema.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Strictly contraindicated in pregnant women, women of childbearing potential, and children. Pregnant women must not handle leaking capsules (dermal absorption causes feminization of male fetuses). Reduces serum PSA by 50%; adjust PSA thresholds accordingly during prostate cancer screening.
