Clinical Overview
Memantine Hydrochloride is an uncompetitive, low-to-moderate affinity, voltage-dependent N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist. Pathological chronic exposure to high glutamate concentrations produces excitotoxic neuronal death in Alzheimer's disease; memantine blocks pathological tonic glutamate influx through NMDA channels while preserving physiological phasic neurotransmission necessary for learning and memory. Indicated for moderate-to-severe dementia of the Alzheimer's type.

Usage Guidelines
Take orally once daily with water, with or without food. Titrate dose gradually in weekly increments to the target maintenance dose (20 mg/day). Follow doctor's schedule.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Dizziness, headache, confusion, constipation, somnolence, hypertension, coughing. Rare/Severe: Seizures, heart failure, psychosis, pancreatitis, and acute renal failure.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution in patients with severe renal impairment (dosage reduction required if CrCl < 30 mL/min) and history of seizure disorders. Alkalinizing agents (sodium bicarbonate, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors) reduce renal clearance of memantine, increasing toxicity risk.
