Alprazolam is a short-acting, high-potency triazolobenzodiazepine. It enhances the binding affinity of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA to GABAA receptors, opening neuronal chloride ion channels, hyperpolarizing membranes, and producing rapid anxiolytic, sedative, muscle-relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects. Indicated for acute management of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder with or without agoraphobia.
