Clinical Overview
Deflazacort Oral Suspension 6 mg per 5 ml is an oxazoline derivative of prednisolone with high glucocorticoid and minimal mineralocorticoid activity. In comparative clinical trials, it exhibits a more favorable metabolic and bone safety profile, causing significantly less calcium loss, bone demineralization, growth retardation, and carbohydrate intolerance than conventional prednisone or prednisolone. Indicated for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in pediatric patients (age >=2 years), juvenile idiopathic arthritis, severe pediatric asthma, nephrotic syndrome, and chronic autoimmune disorders.

Usage Guidelines
Shake oral suspension bottle vigorously before each administration. Use the provided calibrated oral dosing syringe. Administer orally once daily in the morning with meals or a cup of milk to minimize gastric discomfort. Dose is strictly calculated by pediatric specialist based on body weight (typically 0.9 mg/kg/day for DMD; 0.25 to 1.5 mg/kg/day for other indications). Never discontinue abruptly; taper gradually.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Weight gain, increased appetite, Cushingoid facial appearance (moon face), upper respiratory infections, central obesity, hirsutism, and behavioral changes. Rare/Severe: Osteopenia/vertebral fractures, cataract formation, adrenal insufficiency upon cessation, and severe immunosuppression.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Gradual dosage tapering is mandatory after prolonged courses to prevent acute adrenal crisis. Contraindicated in systemic fungal infections and live virus vaccinations. Periodic monitoring of pediatric linear growth, weight, blood pressure, and ophthalmic status recommended.
