Clinical Overview
Losartan Potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide combines a selective AT1 receptor blocker with a thiazide diuretic on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. Losartan blocks angiotensin II-induced vasoconstriction and uniquely possesses intrinsic uricosuric properties that increase uric acid excretion, offsetting the hyperuricemic tendency of hydrochlorothiazide, while hydrochlorothiazide reduces extracellular fluid volume. Indicated for the treatment of hypertension not adequately controlled on monotherapy and for reducing stroke risk in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy.
