Clinical Overview
Misoprostol Tablets IP 200 mcg is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) analogue on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It binds to myometrial prostanoid EP receptors, producing strong rhythmic uterine contractions and enzymatic cervical softening/effacement; it also inhibits gastric acid secretion and protects mucosal lining. Indicated for prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), cervical ripening and labor induction, medical termination of pregnancy (in combination with mifepristone), and prevention of NSAID-induced peptic ulcers.

Usage Guidelines
Administration route depends strictly on obstetric/gynecological indication: For PPH prophylaxis/treatment: 400 to 800 mcg sublingually or rectally as directed by institutional protocols. For medical abortion: 800 mcg buccally or sublingually 24-48 hours post-mifepristone. For cervical ripening/labor induction: low titrated doses (25 mcg vaginally or 25 mcg orally every 2-4 hours) under continuous fetal cardiotocography (CTG) monitoring. Swallow with water if used orally for GI protection.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Abdominal pain, transient shivering/chills, hyperthermia (fever), nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and flatulence. Rare/Severe: Uterine hyperstimulation/tachysystole, uterine rupture (especially with prior cesarean scar), severe fetal distress, and anaphylactoid shock.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Black Box Warning: Uterine rupture risk when used for labor induction in women with prior cesarean delivery or major uterine surgery. Contraindicated during pregnancy unless indicated for termination or labor induction at term. Monitor maternal vital signs and uterine tone.
