Clinical Overview

Desensitizing Toothpastes (Potassium Nitrate 5% w/w with Sodium Monofluorophosphate, or Strontium Chloride Hexahydrate 10% w/w) is a therapeutic dental dentifrice on the PMBI formulary. Potassium nitrate diffuses through open dentinal tubules to increase extracellular potassium ion concentration, depolarizing sensory nerve endings in the dental pulp and blocking action potential transmission to provide lasting relief from dentin hypersensitivity pain (cold, hot, sweet, tactile triggers). Strontium chloride physically occludes open dentinal tubules. Fluoride remineralizes enamel. Indicated for dentinal hypersensitivity and prevention of dental caries.

Usage Guidelines

Apply a 1-inch ribbon of toothpaste onto a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brush teeth thoroughly for at least 2 minutes, twice daily (morning and evening), paying attention to sensitive exposed root surfaces. Spit out thoroughly; minimize swallowing. Use continuously for lasting desensitization.

General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.

Possible Side Effects

Extremely safe with no significant side effects. Mild local irritation or burning if swallowed.

*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.

Precautions & Warnings

Over-The-Counter dental paste. Do not swallow. If dentin sensitivity persists after 4 weeks of continuous use, consult a dentist as underlying pulpitis, tooth decay, or cracked tooth may be present.
