Clinical Overview
Doxycycline is a broad-spectrum, long-acting synthetic tetracycline antibiotic. It acts by reversibly binding to the 30S bacterial ribosomal subunit, preventing the binding of aminoacyl-tRNA to the ribosomal acceptor site and halting protein synthesis. Possesses anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting matrix metalloproteinases. Indicated for rickettsial infections (scrub typhus, Rocky Mountain spotted fever), chlamydial infections, acne vulgaris, malaria prophylaxis, respiratory tract infections (atypical pneumonia), and Lyme disease.

Usage Guidelines
Take orally with a full glass of water while sitting or standing upright. Do not lie down for at least 30 to 45 minutes after taking capsules to prevent severe esophageal ulceration. Take with food or milk if stomach upset occurs. Complete the entire course.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, epigastric distress, photosensitivity (sunburn), and tooth discoloration in young children. Rare/Severe: Esophageal ulceration, benign intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri), severe hepatotoxicity, and Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in children under 8 years of age and during the second/third trimesters of pregnancy due to permanent teeth discoloration and bone growth inhibition. Avoid direct sunlight and ultraviolet lamps due to phototoxicity. Separate from antacids, iron, and bismuth subsalicylate by 2-3 hours.
