Clinical Overview
Valganciclovir is an orally bioavailable L-valyl ester prodrug of ganciclovir. After absorption, it undergoes rapid conversion by esterases to ganciclovir, which is phosphorylated by viral protein kinase pUL97 and cellular kinases into ganciclovir triphosphate, a potent inhibitor of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA polymerase. Indicated for the induction and maintenance treatment of CMV retinitis in immunocompromised patients (such as those with AIDS) and prevention of CMV disease in solid organ transplant recipients.

Usage Guidelines
Take strictly with food to maximize systemic absorption and therapeutic bioavailability. Swallow tablets whole; do not break, crush, or chew because ganciclovir has potential teratogenic and mutagenic properties. Follow exact dosing regimens calibrated by your specialist.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Diarrhea, pyrexia, nausea, headache, anemia, and neutropenia. Rare/Severe: Severe hematologic cytopenias (leukopenia, severe neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, pancytopenia), renal impairment, seizures, and male infertility/teratogenicity.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Black box safety warning: High risk of bone marrow suppression, teratogenesis, and reproductive toxicity. Strict contraceptive measures required during and after treatment. Regular complete blood counts (CBC) and serum creatinine monitoring are mandatory.
