Clinical Overview

Etophylline and Theophylline Tablets (77mg/23mg, 115mg/35mg PR, 231mg/69mg PR, 400mg Theophylline PR) is an oral methylxanthine bronchodilator on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. Etophylline enhances the water solubility and gastric tolerance of theophylline. Inhibits phosphodiesterase and antagonizes adenosine receptors to provide continuous bronchodilation and enhance diaphragmatic muscle endurance. Indicated for long-term maintenance of reversible bronchospasm in bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, and COPD.

Usage Guidelines

Take orally once or twice daily after meals with a full glass of water. Swallow prolonged-release tablets whole; do NOT crush, split, or chew. Take consistently with food to avoid gastric irritation.

General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.

Possible Side Effects

Common: Nausea, epigastric distress, headache, insomnia, restlessness, tachycardia, tremors, gastroesophageal reflux. Rare/Severe: Cardiac arrhythmias, intractable seizures, and hypokalemia.

*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.

Precautions & Warnings

Narrow therapeutic index; monitor serum theophylline levels if high doses are used. Clearance is decreased by ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, cimetidine, and heart failure (increasing toxicity risk). Contraindicated in active peptic ulcer disease and uncontrolled epilepsy.
