Clinical Overview

Xylometazoline (0.1% w/v) and Oxymetazoline (0.5mg/ml) Nasal Drops / Spray is a topical sympathomimetic alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenergic agonist nasal decongestant on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors on post-capillary venules in the nasal mucosa, producing immediate vasoconstriction, shrinking engorged turbinates, reducing mucosal edema, and opening obstructed nasal airways within 2 to 5 minutes for up to 8 to 12 hours. Indicated for short-term relief of nasal congestion associated with common cold, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, and otitis media.

Usage Guidelines

Instill 1 to 2 drops (or 1 spray) into each nostril two to three times daily. Blow nose prior to instillation. MAXIMUM TREATMENT DURATION IS STRICTLY 3 TO 5 CONSECUTIVE DAYS. Never use continuously for more than 5 days.

General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.

Possible Side Effects

Common: Transient nasal stinging or burning, local dryness, sneezing. Rare/Severe: Rhinitis medicamentosa (severe rebound nasal congestion and mucosal hypertrophy from overuse), palpitations, hypertension, and systemic absorption toxicity in young children.

*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.

Precautions & Warnings

Black Box Warning: STRICT 3-5 DAY LIMIT; continuous use for more than 5 days causes severe Rhinitis Medicamentosa (rebound chemical congestion and chronic dependence).
