Clinical Overview
Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA) Tablets (150mg, 300mg) is a naturally occurring hydrophilic tertiary bile acid on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It replaces toxic hydrophobic endogenous bile acids (cholic and chenodeoxycholic acids) in the circulating bile acid pool, protects cholangiocytes against bile acid-induced apoptosis, stimulates hepatobiliary secretion, and solubilizes cholesterol from gallstones by dispersing cholesterol in liquid crystals. Indicated for dissolution of radiolucent, non-calcified cholesterol gallstones (<15mm diameter) in functioning gallbladders, primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (IHCP).

Usage Guidelines
Take orally in divided doses with or after meals with water. Gallstone dissolution: 8 to 10 mg/kg/day (taken as two divided doses or single dose at bedtime). PBC: 13 to 15 mg/kg/day in 2 to 4 divided doses with food. Continue for at least 6 to 12 months for stone dissolution.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Mild diarrhea, loose stools, nausea, abdominal pain. Rare/Severe: Calcification of gallstones, elevated transaminases, and allergic rash.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in radiopaque (calcified) gallstones, non-functioning gallbladder, acute cholecystitis, and complete biliary obstruction. Monitor liver function tests (AST, ALT, GGT) monthly for the first 3 months and every 6 months thereafter. Avoid co-administration with bile acid sequestrants (cholestyramine) or aluminum antacids.
