Clinical Overview
Moxifloxacin is a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic with enhanced bactericidal activity against Gram-positive bacteria (including penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae) and anaerobes, alongside standard Gram-negative coverage. It does not require dosage adjustments in renal impairment because it is eliminated primarily by hepatic glucuronide and sulfate conjugation. Indicated for community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial sinusitis, complicated intra-abdominal infections, and second-line MDR-TB regimens.

Possible Side Effects
Common: Nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, vomiting. Rare/Severe: QT prolongation and torsades de pointes, tendonitis/tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, acute liver failure, and Clostridioides difficile colitis.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in patients with known QT prolongation, uncorrected hypokalemia, or severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh C). Boxed warning for tendonitis and neurotoxicity. Avoid co-administration with antiarrhythmic drugs (amiodarone, sotalol) and other QT-prolonging medicines.
