Clinical Overview
Sumatriptan is a pioneer selective 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist (triptan) on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. Activation of vascular 5-HT1B receptors mediates vasoconstriction of painfully dilated dural and meningeal blood vessels, while stimulation of neuronal 5-HT1D receptors on trigeminal perivascular nerves inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides (CGRP, substance P). Indicated for the acute abortive treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults.

Usage Guidelines
Take orally with water at the very first onset of migraine headache pain (not during the aura phase). If headache improves but recurs, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours. Do not exceed 200 mg in any 24-hour period. Not for migraine prevention.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: "Triptan sensations" (chest, neck, or throat tightness, pressure, or heaviness), tingling, dizziness, warm-hot sensations, flushing, nausea. Rare/Severe: Coronary artery vasospasm, acute myocardial infarction, ventricular arrhythmias, stroke, and serotonin syndrome.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in ischemic heart disease, history of myocardial infarction, coronary vasospasm (Prinzmetal's angina), uncontrolled hypertension, and peripheral vascular disease. Contraindicated within 24 hours of other triptans or ergotamine medications. Do not take with MAOIs.
