Clinical Overview
Trientine Hydrochloride Capsules (250mg) is an oral copper-chelating agent on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It binds copper by forming a stable, non-toxic planar tetradentate ring complex that is excreted in the urine, removing excess systemic and hepatic copper accumulation. Indicated for the treatment of Wilson's disease in patients who are intolerant of or unable to take penicillamine (due to severe adverse reactions or lupus-like syndromes).

Usage Guidelines
Take orally on an empty stomach: at least 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals, and at least 1 hour apart from any other drug, food, or milk with a full glass of water. Adult dose: 750 mg to 1250 mg daily in 2 to 4 divided doses. Swallow whole. Store in a refrigerator (2-8°C).
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Mild nausea, epigastric distress, skin rash, iron deficiency anemia. Rare/Severe: Neurological worsening at therapy onset, dystonia, severe aplastic anemia, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Must be taken on an empty stomach; food, minerals, and milk dramatically inhibit absorption. Space iron supplements at least 2 hours apart (trientine chelates iron, reducing efficacy of both). Monitor 24-hour urinary copper excretion regularly.
