Mupirocin (2% w/w ointment) is a naturally derived antibiotic produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It reversibly binds specifically to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, completely arresting RNA and protein synthesis with zero cross-resistance to other antibiotic classes. Displays potent bactericidal activity against MRSA, MSSA, and Streptococcus pyogenes. Indicated for impetigo, traumatic skin lesions secondarily infected by S. aureus, and eradication of nasal MRSA carriage.

Usage Guidelines
Apply a small amount to clean, affected skin 3 times daily for up to 10 days. May be covered with a sterile dressing. Wash hands after application.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Burning sensation, stinging, localized pain, pruritus, dry skin. Rare/Severe: Severe systemic allergic reactions, contact dermatitis.

Precautions & Warnings
Ointment contains polyethylene glycol vehicle; do not apply over extensive open wounds or burned skin in patients with renal impairment to avoid PEG absorption and toxicity. Do not use for longer than 10 days.
