Clinical Overview
Quetiapine Fumarate is a dibenzothiazepine atypical antipsychotic. It exhibits antagonist activity at serotonin 5-HT2A and dopamine D2 receptors, with rapid dissociation from D2 receptors ("hit-and-run" kinetics) which minimizes extrapyramidal symptoms and hyperprolactinemia. Its active metabolite, norquetiapine, potently inhibits norepinephrine reuptake (NET) and acts as a 5-HT1A partial agonist, conferring distinctive antidepressant efficacy. Indicated for schizophrenia, acute manic episodes in bipolar I disorder, bipolar depression, and adjunctive therapy in major depressive disorder.
