Clinical Overview
Selegiline Hydrochloride (L-deprenyl) is an irreversible, selective inhibitor of monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B). By inhibiting dopamine catabolism in the brain, it prolongs and potentiates the therapeutic action of endogenous and exogenous dopamine. Indicated as adjunctive therapy in Parkinson's disease patients being treated with levodopa/carbidopa who exhibit deterioration in the quality of response.

Usage Guidelines
Take orally twice daily, at breakfast and lunch with water. Avoid late afternoon or evening dosing because its amphetamine metabolites can cause severe insomnia.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Nausea, dizziness, insomnia, abdominal pain, dry mouth, confusion, orthostatic hypotension. Rare/Severe: Serotonin syndrome, hypertensive crisis at high doses, and hallucinations.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Strictly contraindicated with pethidine (meperidine), tramadol, and other MAOIs. At doses > 10 mg/day, selectivity for MAO-B is lost, increasing the risk of dietary tyramine hypertensive reactions. Avoid combining with SSRIs without clinical oversight.
