Clinical Overview
Paroxetine is a phenylpiperidine-derivative selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with the highest affinity for SERT among all SSRIs. It also exhibits mild anticholinergic and nitric oxide synthase-inhibiting properties. Prolonged-release formulation ensures gradual drug release over 24 hours, mitigating peak-related gastrointestinal and sedative adverse effects. Indicated for major depressive disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and PTSD.

Usage Guidelines
Swallow prolonged-release tablets whole with water in the morning, with or without breakfast. Do not chew, crush, or break tablets. Strict adherence is vital; missing a single dose can precipitate severe discontinuation syndrome.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Nausea, somnolence, sweating, tremor, asthenia, dry mouth, constipation, sexual dysfunction (erectile dysfunction, anorgasmia), weight gain. Rare/Severe: Severe discontinuation syndrome (electric shock sensations, dizziness), suicidal thoughts, serotonin syndrome, and teratogenicity (cardiac defects).
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Boxed warning for suicidality in young patients. Contraindicated in pregnancy (Category D: congenital cardiac malformations). Severe discontinuation syndrome upon sudden cessation; requires slow, meticulous tapering. Avoid concurrent MAOIs.
