Clinical Overview
Bupropion Hydrochloride is a monocyclic aminoketone antidepressant that acts as a dual norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI). It does not affect serotonin or monoamine oxidase, and lacks anticholinergic, sedative, and sexual side effects common to SSRIs. Prolonged-release tablets provide sustained plasma levels. Indicated for major depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and smoking cessation aid.

Usage Guidelines
Swallow prolonged-release tablets whole with water in the morning (or twice daily spaced at least 8 hours apart). Do not crush, chew, or divide tablets, as rapid release drastically increases seizure risk. Do not take close to bedtime to prevent severe insomnia.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Insomnia, agitation, dry mouth, headache, nausea, constipation, tremor, weight loss. Rare/Severe: Dose-dependent epileptic seizures (especially with bulimia/anorexia), neuropsychiatric reactions during smoking cessation, severe hypertension, and angle-closure glaucoma.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Boxed warning for suicidality. Contraindicated in patients with seizure disorders, current or past diagnosis of bulimia or anorexia nervosa, and abrupt withdrawal from alcohol or sedatives. Contraindicated with MAOIs.
