Clinical Overview
Torsemide / Torasemide Tablets (5mg, 40mg) is a long-acting pyridine-sulfonylurea loop diuretic on the WHO Model List framework. It inhibits the Na+/K+/2Cl- carrier system in the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop, blocking active sodium and chloride reabsorption. It features high oral bioavailability (~80%), consistent absorption regardless of intestinal mucosal edema, and an extended duration of action (~12 hours) with anti-aldosteronergic properties that cause less potassium wasting than furosemide. Indicated for treatment of edema associated with congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease (CKD), nephrotic syndrome, hepatic cirrhosis, and management of hypertension.

Usage Guidelines
Edema: Take orally 10 mg to 20 mg once daily in the morning with water; titrate up to 40 mg to 100 mg daily in renal impairment. Hypertension: 2.5 mg to 5 mg once daily. Morning administration is strongly advised to prevent nighttime urination.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Polyuria, dizziness, headache, dehydration, mild hypokalemia, hyponatremia. Rare/Severe: Severe electrolyte depletion, hypotension, ototoxicity (tinnitus, hearing loss with high doses in renal failure), and acute kidney injury.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in anuria, hepatic coma, and severe hypokalemia/hyponatremia. Monitor serum electrolytes (potassium, sodium), BUN, and creatinine routinely. Caution in patients with gout (may elevate uric acid).
