Clinical Overview
Albendazole is a broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It acts by binding to helminth tubulin, inhibiting microtubule polymerization, and depleting glycogen reserves, leading to energy depletion and immobilization of parasites. Indicated for single and mixed nematode infestations (roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, pinworm), strongyloidiasis, neurocysticercosis (Taenia solium tapeworm larvae), and hydatid disease (Echinococcus granulosus).

Usage Guidelines
Tablets should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing or crushed and taken with water. For systemic tissue helminthiases (cysticercosis/hydatid), take with fatty food to enhance absorption. Complete the prescribed dose.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, and reversible alopecia with prolonged use. Rare/Severe: Elevation of liver enzymes, bone marrow suppression (leukopenia, pancytopenia in long-term treatment), and acute intracranial hypertension in neurocysticercosis.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in pregnancy (known teratogen); females of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during and for 1 month after therapy. Long-term treatment requires biweekly monitoring of complete blood counts and liver function.
