Clinical Overview
Piperacillin and Tazobactam is an extended-spectrum ureidopenicillin combined with a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Piperacillin exhibits potent bactericidal activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacteriaceae, and anaerobes by inhibiting cell wall synthesis, while tazobactam inactivates plasmid- and chromosomally-mediated beta-lactamases. Indicated for nosocomial and severe community-acquired pneumonia, complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated skin/soft tissue infections, febrile neutropenia, and complicated urinary tract infections.
