🧴 Clinical Application
Take orally 50 mg once daily with the evening meal for the first 2 to 4 weeks (to minimize laxative-induced diarrhea), then increase to 50 mg twice daily with meals with water. Clinical onset is delayed (requires 4 to 8 weeks for therapeutic benefit). Swallow whole.
⚠️ Side Effects
Common: Diarrhea / loose stools (occurs in up to 30-40% during initial weeks), abdominal pain, harmless dark yellow to orange discoloration of urine. Rare/Severe: Severe diarrhea with dehydration, and hepatotoxicity (elevated transaminases).
🛡️ Safety Warnings
Contraindicated in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis), intestinal obstruction, or pre-existing liver disease. Discontinue immediately if severe persistent diarrhea occurs. In elderly patients (>65 years), start at 50 mg daily and monitor closely.
