Atracurium Besylate is an intermediate-acting non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It competitively antagonizes nicotinic acetylcholine receptors at the motor endplate of skeletal muscles. It undergoes unique spontaneous non-enzymatic degradation at physiological pH and temperature (Hofmann elimination) and ester hydrolysis, making its duration of action independent of hepatic or renal function. Indicated as an adjunct to general anesthesia to facilitate endotracheal intubation and skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation in intensive care.
