Usage Guidelines
For Intravenous (IV) or Intramuscular (IM) injection: In acute adrenal crisis: 100 mg IV stat bolus over 3-5 minutes, followed by 100 mg IV infusion every 6 to 8 hours diluted in 5% Dextrose in Normal Saline to correct hypoglycemia and hyponatremia. Reconstitute with sterile water for injection.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Emergency IV: Rapid administration may cause transient perineal burning/paresthesia, hypokalemia, hypertension, and hypernatremia. Oral physiological replacement: Minimal ADRs at correct replacement doses; overtreatment causes Cushingoid symptoms, osteoporosis, and weight gain.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Black Box Warning: Failure to increase dose during acute stress, trauma, or infection can lead to fatal Addisonian crisis. Gradual tapering required if withdrawing supratherapeutic doses. Contraindicated in systemic fungal infections (except for emergency replacement). Patients must carry steroid emergency medical alert identification.
