Clinical Overview
Calcium Gluconate Injection IP (10% w/v ampoule / 1g in 10ml, delivering 93 mg elemental calcium) is a sterile parenteral calcium replenishment agent on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It raises extracellular calcium concentrations, stabilizing cardiac myocyte membrane potential against hyperkalemia and reversing hypocalcemic tetany. Indicated for emergency treatment of acute severe hypocalcemia (tetany, carpopedal spasm), cardioprotection in severe hyperkalemia, and magnesium sulfate toxicity reversal.

Usage Guidelines
Administer by SLOW intravenous injection or intermittent IV infusion over at least 5 to 10 minutes (diluted in 5% Dextrose or 0.9% NaCl). NEVER administer by rapid IV push (causes severe bradycardia, arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest). Never administer IM or subcutaneously (causes severe calcinosis cutis and tissue necrosis). Continuous ECG monitoring is mandatory during acute IV administration.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Sensation of peripheral warmth, flushing, chalky taste. Rare/Severe: Severe bradycardia, ventricular fibrillation, cardiac arrest with rapid IV push, and tissue necrosis on extravasation.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Inject slowly IV over >5-10 minutes with ECG monitoring. Strictly contraindicated in hypercalcemia and concurrent IV digoxin (calcium precipitates fatal digitalis arrhythmias). Incompatible with solutions containing bicarbonates, phosphates, or sulfates (forms insoluble precipitates).
