Clinical Overview
Cephalexin is a classic first-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic. It exerts bactericidal action by inhibiting transpeptidase enzymes involved in the final stages of bacterial cell wall synthesis. Demonstrates strong in vitro activity against susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (methicillin-sensitive), Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Escherichia coli. Indicated for respiratory tract infections, otitis media, skin and soft tissue infections, and uncomplicated cystitis.

Common: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, abdominal pain, and genital pruritus/candidiasis. Rare/Severe: Anaphylaxis, Clostridioides difficile colitis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and acute interstitial nephritis.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalexin or other cephalosporins. Caution in penicillin-allergic individuals due to cross-reactivity risk. May cause false-positive results in urine glucose tests using copper reduction (Benedict's solution).
