Clinical Overview

Betamethasone (Injection IP 4mg/ml) is a potent, long-acting synthetic glucocorticoid on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. Structurally the 16-beta isomer of dexamethasone, it provides potent anti-inflammatory action with zero mineralocorticoid effect and readily crosses the placenta to stimulate fetal type II pneumocyte maturation and surfactant production. Indicated for antenatal prophylaxis of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm labor, severe rheumatoid arthritis, angioedema, and dermatological autoimmune flares.

Usage Guidelines

For Deep Intramuscular (IM) injection ONLY: For antenatal fetal lung maturation: 12 mg IM administered as two doses 24 hours apart (course complete at 48 hours). Administer into the gluteal muscle; do NOT administer intravenously.

General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.

Possible Side Effects

Common: Headache, dizziness, insomnia, facial flushing, increased appetite, and mild gastric irritation. Rare/Severe: Severe immunosuppression, adrenal suppression, hypokalemia, steroid-induced hyperglycemia, and glaucoma.

*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.

Precautions & Warnings

Contraindicated in untreated systemic infections and live viral immunization. In maternal preterm administration, monitor maternal blood glucose (steroid hyperglycemia) and rule out chorioamnionitis before administration.
