Clinical Overview
Parasympatholytic Mydriatic and Cycloplegic agent on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It competitively blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors in the eye, paralyzing the pupillary sphincter muscle (causing mydriasis / pupil dilation) and the ciliary muscle (causing cycloplegia / paralysis of accommodation). Indicated for diagnostic mydriasis and cycloplegic refraction, and for preventing posterior synechiae in acute anterior uveitis.

Usage Guidelines
Instill one drop into the eye 15 to 20 minutes prior to ophthalmic examination. For uveitis, instill 2 to 3 times daily as prescribed. Protect eyes from bright light with sunglasses while dilated.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Photophobia (light sensitivity), blurred near vision, transient stinging, dry mouth, tachycardia. Rare/Severe: Acute angle-closure glaucoma attack in eyes with shallow anterior chambers; systemic anticholinergic toxicity in young children (confusion, flushing, hyperthermia).
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in patients with anatomically narrow anterior chamber angles or angle-closure glaucoma; always evaluate anterior chamber depth prior to instillation. Vision will remain blurred for reading for 4 to 6 hours (tropicamide) or up to 24-48 hours (homatropine); do not drive until pupils return to normal.
