Clinical Overview
Rifaximin is a non-systemic, gut-selective rifamycin-class antibacterial agent. It acts by binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase, blocking bacterial RNA transcription. Oral bioavailability is less than 0.4%, ensuring minimal systemic absorption and concentrating therapeutic power within the intestinal lumen without disturbing extraintestinal flora. Indicated for traveler's diarrhea (caused by non-invasive E. coli), reduction in risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy recurrence, and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).

Usage Guidelines
Swallow whole with a glass of water, with or without food. For hepatic encephalopathy, take consistently twice daily as long-term maintenance therapy. For traveler's diarrhea or IBS-D, complete the prescribed 3-day or 14-day course.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Flatulence, abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, headache, defecation urgency. Rare/Severe: Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (rare but possible), severe hypersensitivity reactions, and angioedema.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Not effective in diarrheal illnesses caused by invasive pathogens (Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella) or systemic bacterial infections accompanied by high fever or bloody stools. Caution in severe hepatic impairment (Child-Pugh C) due to slightly increased systemic exposure.
