Clinical Overview
Telmisartan and Hydrochlorothiazide combines an AT1 angiotensin II receptor antagonist with a thiazide diuretic. Telmisartan suppresses the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone axis, while hydrochlorothiazide inhibits sodium and chloride reabsorption in the distal convoluted renal tubules, increasing urinary excretion of sodium, chloride, and water. Telmisartan counteracts diuretic-induced potassium wasting and metabolic disturbances. Indicated for the treatment of hypertension not adequately controlled on telmisartan monotherapy.
