Tofisopam is a 2,3-benzodiazepine derivative that differs structurally and pharmacologically from classical 1,4-benzodiazepines. It binds to stereospecific sites in the central nervous system without binding to classical benzodiazepine GABAA binding sites, producing anxiolytic and autonomic stabilizing actions without causing sedation, muscle relaxation, amnesia, motor impairment, or dependence. Indicated for anxiety disorders, somatic neuroses, vegetative dystonia, and alcohol withdrawal anxiety.
