Vancomycin Hydrochloride is a tricyclic glycopeptide bactericidal antibiotic. It acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding with high affinity to the D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of cell wall peptidoglycan precursors. Indicated intravenously for severe infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), enterococcal infections, endocarditis, and surgical prophylaxis in high-risk patients. When given orally (capsules), it is not absorbed systemically and acts locally to treat Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (pseudomembranous colitis) and staphylococcal enterocolitis.

Usage Guidelines
For oral use only in Clostridioides difficile colitis. Swallow whole with water; oral vancomycin is not absorbed into the bloodstream and acts topically within the gut lumen. Complete the full prescribed course.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Infusion site pain, mild nausea. Rare/Severe: "Red Man Syndrome" (histamine-mediated flushing, erythematous rash on face/neck/torso, and hypotension caused by rapid IV infusion), nephrotoxicity (acute kidney injury), ototoxicity (hearing loss), neutropenia, and DRESS syndrome.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Black box caution for nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, especially when combined with aminoglycosides, loop diuretics, or piperacillin-tazobactam. Mandatory slow IV infusion rate (minimum 60 minutes) to avoid Red Man Syndrome. Monitor serum trough levels and kidney function routinely.
