Clinical Overview
Rizatriptan Benzoate is a second-generation selective serotonin 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptor agonist with rapid oral absorption (onset of pain relief within 30 minutes). It selectively constricts painfully distended cranial vessels and inhibits trigeminal calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) release. Indicated for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults.

Usage Guidelines
Place orally disintegrating strip on the tongue, where it dissolves rapidly without requiring water. Take at the earliest onset of migraine headache. A second strip may be taken after at least 2 hours if headache recurs. Maximum dose: 30 mg in 24 hours (or 15 mg if taking propranolol).
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Dizziness, somnolence, asthenia, nausea, throat and chest tightness, paresthesia. Rare/Severe: Myocardial ischemia/infarction, coronary vasospasm, cerebrovascular accidents, and serotonin syndrome.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in coronary artery disease, history of stroke/TIA, uncontrolled hypertension, and peripheral vascular disease. In patients taking propranolol, rizatriptan dose must not exceed 5 mg per single dose (max 15 mg/day) due to an 70% increase in rizatriptan plasma concentrations.
