Triclofos Sodium is an orally administered phosphate prodrug of trichloroethanol, the active metabolite of chloral hydrate. It is rapidly hydrolyzed in the intestine and liver to trichloroethanol, which enhances inhibitory GABAergic transmission in the central nervous system, producing rapid, naturalistic sedation without significant respiratory or cardiovascular depression. Indicated for short-term pediatric sedation prior to non-invasive diagnostic procedures (EEG, MRI, CT scans, echocardiograms) and short-term insomnia.
