Fluconazole is a synthetic bistriazole antifungal agent on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It selectively inhibits fungal lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, disrupting ergosterol synthesis with 100-fold higher affinity for fungal enzymes than human CYP450. Features exceptional water solubility, high oral bioavailability (>90%), and long half-life (around 30 hours). Indicated for vaginal candidiasis, mucosal candidiasis (oropharyngeal, esophageal), cryptococcal meningitis, tinea pedis/corporis/cruris, and candidal prophylaxis in immunocompromised patients.
