Clinical Overview
Lacosamide is a functionalized amino acid antiepileptic. It selectively enhances the slow inactivation of voltage-gated sodium channels, differing from traditional sodium channel blockers that target fast inactivation, thereby normalizing hyper-excitable neuronal membranes without disrupting physiological activity. Indicated as monotherapy and adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures in patients with epilepsy.

Usage Guidelines
Take orally twice daily (every 12 hours) with water, with or without food. Swallow tablets whole. Taper gradually over at least 1 week when stopping.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Dizziness, headache, nausea, diplopia, vomiting, fatigue, ataxia, tremor. Rare/Severe: Dose-dependent PR interval prolongation, first- or higher-degree AV block, syncope, atrial fibrillation/flutter, and multiorgan hypersensitivity.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution in patients with cardiac conduction abnormalities (AV block, sick sinus syndrome), severe cardiac disease, or concurrent medications that prolong the PR interval (beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers). Obtain baseline ECG in high-risk cardiac patients.
