Clinical Overview
Cefdinir is an extended-spectrum third-generation oral cephalosporin antibiotic. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins, inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Highly stable to many plasmid-mediated beta-lactamases. Indicated for community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections, and acute otitis media in paediatric patients.

Usage Guidelines
For paediatric use. Reconstitute dry syrup with boiled and cooled water. Shake well before each dose. Can be given with or without food. Note: may cause harmless reddish stools if taken concurrently with iron-fortified formula or foods. Store at room temperature; discard after 10 days.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Diarrhea, vaginal moniliasis, nausea, headache, abdominal pain, and reddish stools in presence of iron. Rare/Severe: Pseudomembranous colitis, anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in cephalosporin allergy. Inform patients that stools may turn reddish when taking iron supplements alongside cefdinir due to a non-absorbable iron-cefdinir complex. Dosage adjustment required in patients with renal failure.
