Clinical Overview
Azithromycin is an extended-spectrum azalide subclass macrolide antibiotic. It acts by reversibly binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis without affecting human nucleic acid synthesis. Indicated for community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbations of COPD, bacterial pharyngitis/tonsillitis, acute otitis media, skin and skin structure infections, and uncomplicated genital chlamydial urethritis and cervicitis.

Usage Guidelines
Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, once daily. May be taken with or without meals, though taking with food can minimize mild stomach upset. Do not skip doses and complete the prescribed 3-day or 5-day regimen even if symptoms improve.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and flatulence. Rare/Severe: QT interval prolongation and torsades de pointes, cholestatic jaundice/hepatotoxicity, severe allergic reactions (angioedema, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, DRESS), and Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD).
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide/ketolide antibiotic, and history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use. Caution in patients with known prolongation of QT interval, hypokalemia, or uncorrected hypomagnesemia. Maintain adequate interval of at least 2 hours between aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids and azithromycin.
