Usage Guidelines
Take orally once daily or twice daily at the exact same hour every single day. Strict lifelong adherence is paramount to prevent viral rebound and resistance mutation. Do not skip doses or alter timing without specialist guidance.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Headache, nausea, fatigue, insomnia, diarrhea, abnormal dreams (with efavirenz). Rare/Severe: Renal tubular dysfunction/Fanconi syndrome (tenofovir disoproxil), loss of bone mineral density, severe hypersensitivity (abacavir HLA-B*5701), lactic acidosis/severe hepatomegaly with steatosis, and immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS).
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Black box warnings: Exacerbation of Hepatitis B upon treatment discontinuation in co-infected patients. HLA-B*5701 genetic testing is mandatory prior to abacavir administration to prevent fatal hypersensitivity. Routine monitoring of renal function, bone density, viral load, and CD4 counts is essential.
