Clinical Overview
Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic produced by Streptomyces venezuelae. It reversibly binds to the 50S subunit of the 70S bacterial ribosome, inhibiting peptidyl transferase and peptide bond formation. Penetrates CSF, eye, and tissues exceptionally well. Because of serious toxicity risks, systemic use is strictly restricted to life-threatening infections where safer alternatives are ineffective or contraindicated, including bacterial meningitis and severe typhoid fever.
