Clinical Overview
Teicoplanin is a parenteral glycopeptide antibiotic with bactericidal activity against aerobic and anaerobic Gram-positive bacteria, including MRSA and Enterococcus faecalis. Like vancomycin, it inhibits peptidoglycan polymerization by binding to D-Ala-D-Ala residues, but features a significantly longer half-life (up to 100 hours), allowing once-daily dosing and intramuscular administration without the risk of Red Man Syndrome. Indicated for complicated skin and soft tissue infections, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and endocarditis.

Usage Guidelines
Administered by a doctor or nurse via slow intravenous bolus injection (over 3-5 minutes), IV infusion (over 30 minutes), or deep intramuscular injection after reconstitution with Water for Injections. Loading doses are required on day 1 for rapid therapeutic blood levels.
General Administration Advice: Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage, frequency, and treatment course. For oral medications, swallow with sufficient water. Never stop antibiotics, psychiatric medications, or antihypertensives abruptly without clinical direction.
Possible Side Effects
Common: Local injection site pain/erythema, rash, pruritus, fever, mild nausea. Rare/Severe: Ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity (lower incidence than vancomycin), thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, and anaphylactoid reactions.
*Note: Individual physiological responses vary. While many patients experience few or no side effects, notify your treating physician if adverse reactions persist or if hypersensitivity (angioedema, skin rash, dyspnea) occurs.
Precautions & Warnings
Contraindicated in teicoplanin hypersensitivity. Monitor renal function and platelet counts during prolonged therapy. Dosage must be reduced in patients with impaired renal function after initial loading doses.
