Clinical Overview
HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor (Statin) on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines. It competitively inhibits 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis, upregulating hepatic LDL receptors and drastically clearing circulating atherogenic LDL-C, VLDL, and triglycerides while increasing HDL-C and stabilizing atherosclerotic plaques. Indicated for primary hypercholesterolemia, mixed dyslipidemia, and primary/secondary prevention of cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, stroke, revascularization).
