It accumulates within the acidic food vacuole of the malaria parasite, inhibiting the biocrystallization of toxic heme into non-toxic hemozoin; uncomplexed heme lyses parasite membranes. Indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of malaria caused by susceptible Plasmodium vivax, P. malariae, and P. ovale, as well as extraintestinal amoebiasis (amoebic liver abscess).
